How Do I Recharge a 1991 Honda Accord AC?

The Honda Accord was the first Japanese car to be manufactured in the United States. Sold since 1982, the Accord has been a continuing success for Honda. Recharging the air-conditioning system in the '82 Accord does require some professional assistance -- you will have to have a professional evacuate the old air-conditioning refrigerant from the system. Once you've taken care of that, though, you can do the rest of the job in your own garage. Recharging the Accord's air-conditioning system should take about half an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Coolant recharge kit
  • Compressor oil
  • Two cans of 134a coolant
  • Attach the 134a coolant to the valve in your recharge kit. The valve needle will puncture the can top and pressurize it.

  • Attach the valve unit nozzle to the low-pressure side of the air-conditioning lines. This is located in the engine compartment on the passenger side, near the evaporator. The nozzle should press to the nipple, catching it and locking them together.

  • Start the engine on your Accord and turn the AC up full blast. Open the valve, allowing the coolant to be sucked up into the system. This should take 10 minutes. Allow the can to empty. Pull up on the outer ring of the low-pressure point while also pulling the nozzle. Turn the coolant can counterclockwise and detach it.

  • Repeat Step 3, this time with the can of compressor lubricant. Allow the can to completely dispense the lubricant, then remove it. Continue this process with coolant until the system will not take any more. AC systems in Accords use about one can of lubricant and two cans of coolant.
