How to Convert a 6-Volt to a 12-Volt System

While modern vehicles are equipped with 12-volt electrical systems, older vehicles contain less powerful 6-volt systems. The 6-volt systems are not only antiquated, they also require much more current to power vehicle components than 12-volt systems. You can update many of the outdated 6-volt components in the electrical system by upgrading to a 12-volt system. This also will allow let you install modern parts, such as stereos and alarms, that require more voltage. The process of converting the entire electrical system from 6 volts to 12 volts can be costly and time consuming. But the benefits are worth the time and expense. If you don't have experience working on automotive electrical systems, enlist the help of someone who does.

Things You'll Need

  • 12-volt electrical components
  • 12volt battery
  • Vehicle wiring schematic
  • Vehicle owner's manual
  • Choose a 12-volt battery to replace the existing 6 volt battery. In addition to standard 12-volt batteries, a number of specialty 12 volt batteries are available that offer superior capacity and lighter weight. Before purchasing the new battery, measure your vehicle's battery compartment to ensure the new battery will fit. Also make sure the height of the new battery will not prevent the vehicle's hood from closing.

  • Replace the 6-volt alternator with a 12 volt model. Consult the owner's manual and wiring schematic to determine any other vehicle components that need upgrading. Gauges, windshield wiper motors, clocks, horns and anything else that will not function at higher voltage must be replaced. Carefully examine the wiring schematic so that every electrical component can be evaluated and upgraded if necessary.

  • Inspect all of the wiring in the vehicle and replace any sections that are damaged. In addition to the wiring, use the wiring schematic to locate and inspect all of the grounds.
