How to Paint With VHT

VHT paints are ceremic enamel paints used on automotive engines, brake calipers and rotors, exhaust systems and many other car parts where heat may be a factor. VHT paints are an aerosol spray paint and are easy to apply. The curing process for VHT paints is heat-based, however, and requires a process of heating, cooling and reheating. The simplest method of curing the paints is to bake the painted part in a regular household oven.

Things You'll Need

  • Fine-grit sandpaper
  • Oven
  • Select an outdoor or well-ventilated work space. Lay your parts out on a flat surface. If using a table or other furniture, protect the surface with newspaper or drop cloths.

  • Shake the can of paint until the ball begins to rattle. Continue shaking for at least one additional minute. Hold the can approximately one foot from the parts and apply an even coating of paint. Allow to dry for one hour and sand lightly with a fine-grint sandpaper.

  • Wipe the parts with a lint-free cloth and apply another coat of paint, ensuring all surfaces are covered. Allow to dry for one hour.

  • Pre-heat your oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit and bake the parts for 15 minutes. Allow to cool.

  • Reheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and bake the parts for 30 minutes. Allow to cool to completely cure the paint.
