How to Install an Aftermarket Stereo in a Jeep Wrangler

If you've owned your Jeep Wrangler for a number of years, you might have noticed that your stereo doesn't perform like it used to. This is usually due to the stereo unit in the dash. Over time, the electronics inside the Wrangler's stereo will begin to malfunction due to age and normal use. Thankfully, you can replace the factory stereo with an aftermarket one.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 10 mm socket
  • Socket wrench
  • Flat tip screwdriver
  • Take a screwdriver and remove the ashtray and the screw behind the ashtray, then remove the two screws on the very top of the center bezel surrounding the stereo and HVAC controls.

  • Pull the bezel off the center dash area.

  • Wedge a flat tip screwdriver underneath the top of the dash panel at the base of the windshield. Pry up on the panel and lift it off with your hand as you work your way across the panel with the screwdriver.

  • Remove the two screws underneath the panel you removed in Step 3. These screws are located in the center of the dash.

  • Remove the dash panel. It should pull off at this point with no trouble.

  • Remove the two bolts that hold the radio in place with a socket wrench and slide the radio out.

  • Remove the grounding strap bolt on the radio with a socket wrench.

  • Remove the gray electrical connector from the back of the stereo as well as the antenna plug.

  • Plug the antenna cable and the connector into the new stereo.

  • Reconnect the grounding strap to the new radio.

  • Slide the new stereo into the dash and secure it to the dash with the original bolts.

  • Thread and tighten the two screws on the top of the dash.

  • Secure the center stereo bezel to the dash and snap the trim piece back onto the top of the dash.
