How to Increase Horsepower & Torque on a 93-98 5.9 Diesel Cummins Motor Home

The 5.9L Cummins Diesel engine, installed primarily in Dodge trucks, but also fitted in motor homes, is perhaps more amenable to customization than practically any other engine offered before the new diesel engines began to hit the market. With a many number of options for increasing power in these engines, the first upgrade that any serious enthusiast should undertake is also one of the least expensive -- but most effective -- allowing you to build on further power adders until your fuel economy and power goals are met.

Things You'll Need

  • Diesel tuning module with monitoring screen
  • Locate the sub-dash diagnostic port on your Cummins-powered motor home. It will be located near the door, below the dashboard, near your left knee when driving.

  • Install the diesel programmer's included housing onto the dashboard of the motor home by removing the cover from the double sided mounting tape and pressing the housing securely onto the dashboard. Install the housing near to the A-pillar, rather than in front of the steering wheel. The programmer readout should be in a position where you can glance at it quickly, but not take your eyes off the road or block your view of the road.

  • Run the wire which will install into the sub dash diagnostic port through the opening in the housing and press the programmer into place in its housing, then route the wire down the back or side of the dashboard.

  • Install the programmer's harness into the sub dash diagnostic port, pressing firmly.
