How to Paint a Valance on a Silverado

The front bumper valance on most Chevrolet Silverados are not painted to match the bumper. The valance is made of a thick plastic material that has a slightly rough texture. The valance is a dark gray color, almost black, but can become lighter gray as it ages. The valance can easily be painted to match your Silverado, or another color, to get rid of the gray. Use materials and paint from an auto parts store to paint the valance on your Silverado.

Things You'll Need

  • 220 sandpaper
  • Adhesion promoter spray
  • Masking tape
  • Spray paint
  • Spray clear coat paint
  • Sand the plastic surface of the valance with 220 grit sandpaper. This smooths some of the rough texture and also prepares the surface so the paint can adhere to the material. Sand all of the surface that will be painted, including the edges and any openings. Most Silverados have openings for grilles or lights.

  • Place masking tape around the surrounding surfaces so the paint overspray doesn't land on anything but the valance. Cover any fog lights or grilles in the valance so they aren't painted in the process.

  • Coat the surface of the valance evenly with a layer of adhesion promoter. This works like primer and prepares the surface for paint. Without adhesion promoter, the paint will eventually crack and peel off of the valance. Let the adhesion promoter dry for 30 minutes.

  • Spray three thin coats paint onto the surface of the valance, waiting five minutes between each coat. Hold the sprayer 6 to 8 inches from the surface and keep the coats thin so that the paint doesn't run.

  • Cover the freshly painted valance with three thin coats of clear coat paint, using the same spray techniques as with the paint. Let the valance dry for four hours before handling it.
