How to Remove the Key Switch in a 1998 Ford Expedition

Like almost any other Ford vehicle, the 1998 Ford Expedition comes equipped with an ignition switch located just to the right of the steering column. The ignition switch is placed inside a cylinder, which is where you insert your car key to start your vehicle. The cylinder must be functioning properly to engage the ignition; if it is in any way damaged, you can remove it in just minutes from your vehicle, so that you can install a new one.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper clip
  • Sit in the driver's seat and insert your car's key into the ignition, as you normally would, to start the car. Do not turn the key in the ignition.

  • Insert a straightened-out paper clip into the small hold on the ignition cylinder, to the left of the key slot.

  • Push the paperclip as far as you can into the cylinder and then turn the ignition key to the "ACC" position and leave it there.

  • Hold the paper clip with one hand and your car key with the other hand, and gently slide the cylinder out.
