How to Install a KIA Cargo Net

A cargo net is a useful addition to your Kia by keeping loose items from rolling around or falling out when you open the hatch. Installing the cargo net may require some minor modification of your vehicle, although some Kia models may come with predrilled holes for screwing in the mounting anchor. Other models require drilling of the holes for the anchors. Although this sounds intensive, it is a fairly simply task, given the appropriate tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Drill
  • 1/2 inch drill bit
  • 1/4 inch drill bit
  • 1/2 inch drill stop
  • 1/4 drill stop
  • Center punch
  • Hammer
  • Cargo net kit
  • Open the back hatch of your Kia and look for the mushroom anchors at each side. There may already be two at the top, but you might also have all four or none. If you are missing any, there should at least be a recessed area: two at the top and two at the bottom on each side. You can install your own mushroom anchors in those places.

  • Align the center punch with the center of one of the recessed areas and strike the back of the center punch with the hammer to leave a small indention, which will guide the drill bit.

  • Attach the 1/4 inch drill stop and 1/4 inch drill bit to the drill, according to your drill's manual.

  • Place the drill bit against the center indentation you created and drill through the metal. The drill stop will stop you from going too far into the metal.

  • Attach the 1/2 inch drill stop and 1/2 inch drill bit to your drill and widen the hole you created by drilling through again with this wider bit.

  • Slide the washer, included in your cargo net kit, over one of the mushroom assemblies, and screw the mushroom assembly clockwise into the hole you created. Make sure it is securely tightened.

  • Repeat the installation process for any remaining holes that require the mushroom anchors.

  • Hold the cargo net out lengthwise with the center tab toward you at the top of the net.

  • Attach the four loops over the respective mushroom anchors, top-left, top-right, bottom-left and bottom-right, by looping them over the heads of the anchors to complete installation.
