While state politicians and our government look for ways to curb the increasing problem with gross polluting vehicles, local authorities have now taken matters into their own hands, increasing the number of vehicle citations, increasing the amount in fines, and too often impounding a vehicle until the owner can appear in court.

While heavy fines and driving in constant fear can deter many individuals from modifying their street vehicles, take note-there are legal alternatives to safely enjoy our go fast and look good while doing it lifestyle.

The Edelbrock Corporation has introduced its next generation bolt-on turbo kit for the import market in the form of the Performer X Turbocharger kit. This 1999-2000 Honda Civic DOHC VTEC B16A2 turbo kit is a 50-state street legal bolt-on system, approved by the California Air Resource Board. Executive Order (E.O.) number D-215-62 will deter any law enforcement officer from attempting to cite you when they want to inspect what's under your hood.

With all the excitement about this kit being C.A.R.B. legal leaves many to ask-what about horsepower? Well, at a mere 7 psi, horsepower figures came in at 225 whp, an 85-hp gain with an increase of 57 lb-ft of torque, peaking at 157 lb-ft, over baseline runs. While the true potential of the turbo kit may lay dormant due to the kit gaining its 50-state legal status, the true potential of the GT28RS ball-bearing turbo is not nearly tapped into. The GT28RS is capable of boost levels in the realms of 25-28 psi. Edelbrock engineer's state that while other manufacturer's kits claim higher horsepower figures, it's a known fact that with additional tuning and a built motor, this kit has the ability to cater to either the casual driver or hardcore enthusiast.

Key features included with the turbo kit are offset camgear keys, a divorced turbine outlet, additional fuel injectors, fuel and oil lines and a MotoTron ECU, which uses its own intake air temp and manifold pressure sensors to more accurately control fuel and ignition timing when under boost. The unit also compensates for changes in outside air temperature.

With a list price of $4,912.95 and a street price of approximately $4,400 the Edelbrock Performer X Turbocharger kit is reasonably priced when considering the quality and engineering of the unit. Now you can cruise the boulevard and backroads conscientiously knowing your 225-hp beast is 50-state street legal.
