How to Install Trailer Reese Hitches on a Jeep Grand Cherokee

If your Jeep Grand Cherokee did not come with a factory-supplied trailer hitch, you can purchase a Reese trailer hitch, and install it yourself. The hitch is designed to use the existing holes in the frame of the vehicle. This makes installing the hitch much easier than drilling and welding the hitch to the frame. They are classified for different trailer weights, so determine the amount of weight you will be pulling before purchasing the hitch to ensure the correct hitch is installed.

Things You'll Need

  • Safety glasses
  • Wrench set
  • Torque wrench
  • Socket set
  • Remove the bolts that secure the rear tow hook onto the rear frame rail with a wrench, if your vehicle is equipped.

  • Put the Cherokee in "Park" or in first gear, make sure its engine is off, and engage the parking brake.

  • Lay on the ground, and crawl under the vehicle. Locate the bolts that secure the skid plate onto the vehicle. Remove the two rear-most bolts on each frame rail using a wrench.

  • Lift the hitch into position. Align the holes in the hitch with the holes in the frame. Thread the bolts and washers that were removed in Step 2 through the hitch into the frame from under the vehicle.

  • Place the two bolts that came with the kit through the rear-most holes in the hitch and into the frame rails of the vehicle.

  • Torque the bolts to 65 foot-lbs. with a torque wrench and a socket.
