How to Make Stock Exhaust Pipes Sound Better

Your muffler drowns your engine's sound to low levels. Replacing or modifying your exhaust pipe can drastically change -- and often enhance -- the sound of your exhaust system. There is another way to enhance the sound of your exhaust pipes without replacing them. Use a pipe expanding tool. Instead of adding a pricey component, expand and change the shape of the exhaust pipe. It will change the sound much the same way the open end of a trumpet does.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack stands or ramps
  • Blocks or bricks
  • Pipe expanding tool
  • Open-ended wrench
  • Ratchet and socket
  • Large pliers
  • Elevate the rear of the vehicle on a level surface. Place it on jack stands or ramps. For ramps, place a ramp at the back of the car, behind the rear wheels and carefully drive to the top of the ramp. If you prefer to use jack stands, jack the car up with a bumper or floor jack from the rear and place the jack stands underneath the vehicle in locations that are safe for your vehicle. You should consult your user's manual. Use bricks or blocks on the front wheels to prevent the car from rolling.

  • Insert the pipe expansion tool up to the desired length. If you want the wider pipe to be one inch in length, insert the expansion tool in to the pipe one inch. If more is desired, insert the expansion tool to a greater depth. Usually two to three inches will be sufficient. Using either an open-ended wrench or a socket wrench with the correct size, begin to rotate the bolt at the end of the expansion tool clockwise.

  • Stop rotating the bolt at the end of the expansion tool when you reach your desired diameter; when it looks wide enough to you, stop using the expansion tool. Rotate the bolt at the end of the expansion tool counterclockwise until the expansion tool can be removed.

  • Reverse the setup process to complete the task. Reattach all removed components. Lower the vehicle down from the jack stand or ramp.

  • Start the vehicle. Listen to the sound the exhaust pipe makes. A deeper sound can be made by widening the tailpipe further.
