How to Insulate Your Car

Stock car insulation is meant to keep out standard road noises. However, for the driver who modifies his car, the stock insulation is insufficient in keeping out louder exhaust and engine noise. High-quality insulation is expensive, but will keep out most car noise. Insulating a car is not technically difficult, but does require a substantial amount of labor because everything has to be removed from the interior.

Things You'll Need

  • Insulation
  • Screwdriver
  • Wrench
  • Gloves
  • Remove the seats. Bolts hold the seats in place on rails the car slides on. Unscrew the bolts to remove the front and back seats.

  • Remove the plastic panels. They easily pop off with a tug. Larger panels hold some panels, like the ones in the front, so removing them first is a requirement. Underneath the panels are secondary panels that screws hold together. Unscrew them and remove the panels. This will expose the insulation.

  • Remove the old insulation. Use gloves, because the material is itchy and very uncomfortable on raw skin.

  • Place the new insulation. Cover everything the old insulation covered. Proper placement will maximize the effects of insulation.

  • Place the secondary panels back in place and rescrew them.

  • Install the front seat rails, bolting them to the openings in the floor. Install the front seats on the front rails.

  • Install the rear seats, bolting them up to the openings in the rear.
