How Do I Install Towing Mirrors on a Dodge Ram?

If you do any towing with your Dodge Ram, you may have noticed that the stock mirrors are not adequate for this purpose. You can install new towing mirrors that extend to allow you to see around your trailer. The mirrors can be ordered for your specific year of Dodge Ram through an auto parts store. They come powered and heated to match your existing configuration. You must also purchase a mounting support bracket for them to avoid highway vibration.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Socket set
  • Ratchet

Removing the Old Mirrors

  • Open both front doors of the truck and locate the two screws in the door handle. Remove these screws with a Phillips head screwdriver.

  • Remove the screw near the mirror location on the interior door panel with a screwdriver.

  • Pry the door panel off of the door using a flat head screwdriver. It is held to the door frame with small plastic clips. These clips pop out of the door with a little force.

  • Remove the three 10 mm nuts that secure the old mirror in position with a ratchet and socket. Disconnect the power supply connector if you have power mirrors.

  • Repeat these steps with the opposite mirror.

Installing the New Mirrors

  • Place the towing mirrors into position. There are three studs on the towing mirrors that feed through the door. Place the mounting support bracket onto the studs. Thread the nuts onto the studs and tighten them with the ratchet and socket.

  • Reconnect the power supply connector to the new towing mirrors.

  • Replace the door panel by pressing the door panel clips into the door. Verify that each clip has properly set inside the door panel by checking it for looseness.

  • Reinstall the two screws in the handle and the one near the mirror on the interior door panel with the Phillips head screwdriver.

  • Repeat these steps with the opposite mirror.
