How to Install a Dual Battery on a Jeep Wrangler

More battery power is needed in your Jeep Wrangler when you install aftermarket accessories. On-board compressors, winches, welders, and off-road lights are often found on off-road Jeep Wranglers. When these accessories are added, you must install a dual-battery system to provide the power needed to operate them. The single stock battery in the stock battery tray is not enough for the high power these accessories require.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Ratchet and socket kit

Removing Stock Battery Tray

  • Park you Jeep Wrangler on a level surface. Turn your steering wheel to the left. This will allow you to remove a bolt near the shock absorber.

  • Open the hood and disconnect the battery cables using a ratchet and socket. The black, negative cable should be disconnected first.

  • Remove the hold-down bracket on the stock battery using a socket.

  • Remove the battery and set aside. Use caution when removing the battery. Safety gloves and glasses should be worn.

  • Remove the clamp connecting the air tube to the air-box assembly using a flat screwdriver. The air tube is a black, flexible hose that connects the air box to the throttle body on the engine. Set the air tube aside.

  • Remove the fuse box from the stock bracket by pressing on the four plastic clips and disconnecting the box. Set the fuse box aside.

  • Remove the bolts that hold the fuse-box bracket to the battery tray. Set the fuse-box bracket aside.

  • Remove the battery tray by removing the three bolts holding it to the firewall with a socket. There are also four bolts that need to be removed from the front fender.

Installing Dual Battery Tray

  • Install the dual-battery tray into the stock position in your Wrangler. Attach the bracket by fastening the bolts on the fender and firewall.

  • Install the support strap included with the dual-battery tray kit. With the steering wheel turned to the left, install the bolt through the outside hole next to the shock absorber. Tighten the bolt using a socket.

  • Reconnect the fuse-block tray and the fuse block. Reconnect the air-box tube.

  • Install both batteries into the dual-battery tray. Secure the batteries into position by bolting down the fastener strap previously installed.

  • Connect the stock battery terminals to the pig-tail terminals that are installed to the other battery. Connect each battery terminal to the batteries.
