How to Add More Horsepower

Car enthusiasts are always looking for a way to improve the performance and appearance of their rides. One way to do this is by increasing the horsepower in the engine. A car's engine takes in a specific amount of fuel and air, and then uses a fixed ratio to give your car power. Since that's the case, there are several ways to increase your engine's air intake and hence increase your vehicle's horsepower.

Things You'll Need

  • Spark plugs
  • Tires
  • Air filters
  • Supercharger or turbocharger
  • Add a supercharger or a turbocharger to your vehicle to help boost horsepower under your hood. Superchargers and turbochargers are both used to force air into your car's combustion chamber. The more air forced into your car's combustion chamber equates to more power output by your engine. Superchargers and turbochargers can increase horsepower up to 100 percent. However, this added power will use more fuel, and there is a better chance that your car will overheat.

  • Clean your air filter to increase your vehicle's horsepower. Instead of using replaceable air filters, which are typically more flimsy, use a reusable filter that you can clean and reuse. Keeping this filter clean will enable air to pass through more efficiently, therefore increasing your car's horsepower.

  • Upgrade your vehicle's cool air intake system to gain greater horsepower as well as increase gas mileage. Since cool air is heavier than hot air, more of it is forced into the engine, which keeps typically hot air out and creates more power.

  • Replace the spark plugs with performance spark plugs which will ignite fuel faster in your vehicle. The faster the fuel is ignited, the more efficiently it reaches your engine, creating greater horsepower.

  • Fit your car with new performance tires to enhance your vehicle's handling. As surprising as it sounds, without quality tires it may seem like your vehicle is less powerful. Performance relies a lot on the ability of your tires to grip the road. Your engine can output as much horsepower as possible; but if your vehicle isn't equipped with the rest of the tools it needs, it may seem sluggish.
