How to Install a GT Grant Steering Wheel

Installing an aftermarket steering wheel is one of the easiest ways to spice up your car's interior and perhaps make the vehicle more enjoyable to drive. Grant sells a wide range of wheels that fit a variety of cars. The wheels are also relatively easy to install.

Things You'll Need

  • Grant Steering Wheel
  • Installation kit for your vehicle
  • Socket set and ratchet
  • Steering wheel puller
  • Remove the stock steering wheel's horn button or pad. How this is done will depend on the model. Some have horn buttons that pop off, while others have larger horn pads.

  • Remove the old steering wheel nut. Most wheels are held on with a larger nut that goes onto the end of the steering column shaft, which is threaded on the end for the nut and usually has splines to hold the wheel in place.

  • Pull off the steering wheel. The wheel may just pop right off if you pull hard on it, or it might require a steering wheel puller to remove, which is available at most auto parts stores.

  • Slide the steering wheel hub that comes with the mounting kit for your car onto the shaft of the steering column. This usually consists of a steering wheel hub, a post cover, a black sleeve for the post cover and the bolts to fasten the post cover to the hub. Press the hub down firmly as far as it will go.

  • Place the post cover onto the hub and pull the horn wires through the provided hole.

  • Fasten the three bolts that hold the post cover to the hub and tighten with a socket.

  • Using a deep socket, reattach the center nut that holds the steering wheel hub to the steering column. Fasten this nut according to the manufacturer's specs, since this is what holds the wheel to the steering column.

  • Mount the wheel to the post cover with the Allen bolts that are provided with the kit. Not all adapters have a post cover. In some applications, the wheel simply bolts right to the hub.

  • Attach the horn wires to the back of the Grant horn button and press the horn button in place. This should snap in for a relatively tight fit.
