Making Your Own Car Spoiler

Making a Spoiler

  • One of the best projects you can take on as a car enthusiast is the addition of a car spoiler. They add such a dramatic look to your car, and improve performance. You can make your own with some metal working tools and welding equipment. First, take a length of 12 gage steel sheeting. Draw an outline for the spoiler wing in the metal sheet, then cut it out using a metal saw. Grind and sand the edges to your liking.

Cut the Wing Supports

  • Now cut out the wing supports for your spoiler. You'll want to measure your hood and get an idea of where the feet will go on your spoiler wing before you design the shape. Once you have an idea, trace it out on the sheet metal, and then cut with the metal saw. Grind and sand, then dry fit them to the spoiler wing. When you are ready, tack weld the legs right to the spoiler, making sure you have a flush fit. Complete your final weld using a gas or arc welder.

Finishing

  • Grind and sand your spoiler using a rotary grinder and small grain discs. Then prime the spoiler and paint with a top coat. Add graphics or decals to your liking. Finally, it is time to mount the spoiler. To mount it to a hood you should buy spoiler mounting hardware from an auto parts store. To manufacture these requires precision and accuracy. Once you have a suitable pair of mounts, weld them to the legs of the spoiler wing, then follow the directions with the mount hardware for mounting the spoiler to your car.
