How to Build a Truck Tool Box

Whether your truck is your livelihood or simply the workhorse you use while working on the farm, a tool box is necessary to keep everything organized in the truck bed. Commercially built truck tool boxes are available from a variety of manufacturers, but it is easy to build a wooden box that will perform just as well. Follow these simple steps.

Things You'll Need

  • Treated 2"x4" lumber Treated decking boards 3 hinges 2 locking latches 3-inch wood screws
  • Measure the distance between the bed rails in the back of your pickup. Subtract 3 inches from that length to give you the length of your tool box. Measure from the floor of your truck bed to the top of the bed rails and add 3 inches to this measurement to get the height of your box. In this example, we will make it 24 inches deep.

  • Cut four 2"x4" boards to the height that you specified, 4 boards to the length and 4 to the width. Build a frame out of these boards by making two rectangles with the length and height boards and then connecting them with the width boards. Screw everything tightly.

  • Cut the decking boards to fit lengthwise on the box and then cover three of the four sides with decking boards screwed into the frame. Build a top door by laying enough decking boards to cover the top of the box lengthwise and then cross them with two to three short sections of decking boards and screw these together.

  • Lay the door on top of the box and attach it to the box with the hinges and their supplied hardware. Attach the latch to the free edge of the door and then have your helpers assist in lifting it into the back of your truck. Load the box up with tools and other essentials.
