Shocks in the rear of your truck or SUV can go bad and need to be replaced. You may also decide to replace your factory shocks with aftermarket parts such as those made by Rancho. You can install Rancho shocks on your vehicle yourself by following instructions to properly mount the new shocks.
Jack up the rear of the vehicle with the car jack and place jack stand under the frame. Lower the car jack so the vehicle is supported by the jack stands and the tires are at least one inch off the ground. .
Position the car jack so that it is under the rear axle. Raise the axle up so that the shocks are not under pressure.
Find and loosen the lower shock bolt for one of the shocks with the socket wrench. Continue to loosen the bolt until you can remove it.
Find and loosen the upper shock bolt with the socket wrench. Continue to loosen the bolt until you can remove it.
Pull out the old shock and then set the new shock in place. Insert the upper shock bolt into the bracket and shock bushing. Tighten the nut on the bolt by hand.
Adjust the level of the shock to align the lower bolt hole. Insert the shock bolt into the hole and then hand tighten the nut on the bolt.
Tighten the upper and lower bolts with the torque wrench. The bolts should be tightened to at least 80 ft- lbs.
Repeat steps 3 through 7 for the other shock.
