How to Install a Fuel Pressure Gauge for a Carburetor

A fuel pressure gauge is an instrument designed to measure the pressure of the fuel between the fuel pump and the carburetor. A fuel pressure gauge is necessary to determine whether the fuel pump is functioning properly. If the fuel pressure is not high enough, or not steady enough, the engine will not be able to receive enough fuel. Follow the instructions below to install a fuel pressure gauge for a carburetor.

Things You'll Need

  • Rag. Razor blade. Flathead screwdriver. Two small hose clamps. Wrench.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable from the negative battery post. The negative battery post can be identified by the "---" symbol which appears next to the terminal on the battery. To disconnect the cable, loosen the nut on the side of the cable's tip with a wrench, then lift the cable away from the battery.

  • Disconnect the positive battery cable from the positive battery post. The positive battery post can be identified by the "+" symbol next to the terminal on the battery.

  • Locate the rubber fuel line at the carburetor's fuel inlet. The fuel line enters the carburetor at the top of the carburetor, usually on the passenger's side of the carburetor.

  • Place a rag on top of the engine, just underneath the fuel line, to capture any fuel still in the fuel line.

  • Use a razor blade to cut through the rubber fuel line about 6 inches from the carburetor.

  • Slide a small hose clamp over each end of the cut fuel line.

  • Identify the inlet and outlet nozzles on the fuel pressure gauge. Each nozzle will be labeled as either "in" or "out."

  • Insert the outlet nozzle of the gauge into the cut end of the fuel line still attached to the carburetor.

  • Insert the inlet nozzle of the gauge into the other cut end of the fuel line.

  • Slide the hose lamps over each end of the fuel pressure gauge, and tighten the clamps by turning the screws on the clamps in a clockwise direction with a flathead screwdriver.

  • Remove the rag from the top of the engine.

  • Reconnect the positive battery cable to the positive battery terminal by slipping the end of the cable over the terminal and tightening the bolt on the battery cable.

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable to the negative battery terminal by slipping the end of the cable over the terminal and tightening the bolt on the battery cable.

  • Allow at least one hour before starting the engine to allow any fuel on top of the engine to dry.
