When towing a trailer, camper, or boat with a tow vehicle, several crucial components will determine what type of tow package is needed. These factors are towing vehicle, receiver hitch, drawbar type, ball size and trailer type. The type of towing vehicle used will determine the type of receiver hitch required. All vehicles have their own unique specifications and receiver hitches are designed for specific year, make, and model vehicles.
Refer to the vehicle user manual for that vehicle's specific towing capacity.
Select the proper receiver hitch based on the year, make, and model of the towing vehicle. U-haul.com and Etrailer.com both have trailer hitch locators for specific vehicles.
Once the proper receiver hitch is known and purchased, have the hitch assembly professionally installed.
Install a drawbar onto the receiver hitch. A drop down drawbar may need to be used for elevated vehicles to bring the hitch down to the trailer level.
Select the proper size ball for the drawbar. The standard size is a 2" ball, but the trailer that is to be towed may have a different size ball.
