How to Display American Flags on a Vehicle

Display the American flag on your vehicle as a colorful expression of patriotism. American flags exist in a variety of vehicle-friendly options including bumper stickers and license plates. Some states have laws that dictate where you can apply decals or stickers. Understanding the local requirements ensures that your American flag additions are properly applied and lawfully located.

  • Display your license plate in an American flag themed license plate holder. The thick metal edges of the plate frame correspond to the edges of an American flag. American flag license plate frames are available through most custom auto plate companies or websites (see Resources).

  • Order a custom American flag license plate. Plate backgrounds range from a basic American flag to a shaded waving flag or a flag with an American bald eagle emblem in the center (see Resources for vendors). Send your customized flag-plate to the Department of Motor Vehicles in your home state for proper stamping and registration.

  • Place an American flag sticker on your bumper. Bumper sticker displays are a classic and eye-catching way to share your love of country with fellow drivers. If one sticker isn't enough, line the entire length of your bumper with a chain of American flag stickers. Remember, many states prohibit stickers or decals on side or rear windows for safety and visibility reasons, so limit your sticker application to the bumper area.
