How to Level a Dodge RAM

Level Dodge Ram pickup trucks by installing a set of 2-inch-tall spacers placed on top of the front coil springs. The installation of these spacers, also referred to as a leveling kit, eliminates the appearance of a sagging front end, making the front and rear of the truck sit at the same height. Leveling kits are often installed to provide clearance for larger tires or change the cosmetic appearance of a truck.

Things You'll Need

  • Coil spring compressors
  • Dodge Ram leveling kit
  • Jack stands
  • Lug wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Park your Dodge Ram on a level, hard surface and chalk the tires so that the vehicle is unable to roll in either direction. Disconnect the negative battery cables from the truck's battery terminals using a screwdriver to loosen the clamps. Repeat the process to remove the positive battery cables.

  • Lift the truck approximately three to five inches off the ground using a hydraulic jack placed underneath the front axle. Secure the truck in a raised position by lowering the truck's frame onto jack stands. Leave the hydraulic jack in place underneath the truck with some pressure still applied to the front axle.

  • Use a lug wrench to remove the eight lug nuts on each front wheel, then remove the front two tires.

  • Remove the nut and bolt securing each front shock to the frame. Locate the sway bar on the truck and remove the nut, bolt, sway bar link and bushing from the sway bar. Lower the front axle completely, leaving the hydraulic axle in place.

  • Remove the vent hose lines from the truck's shock tower, along with the shock tower and shock from the coil spring perch area. Carefully remove the coil springs and accompanying bushings from the perch before placing the spacer onto the perch. Compress the coil springs using a coil spring compressor and insert the spring to sit on the installed spacer. Secure the spacer and coil spring in place using the hardware included with your kit.

  • Use the hydraulic jack to lift the front axle of the truck back up to re-install the shock, sway bar and vent lines. Repeat the process on the other side of the truck and install the front tires once both sides are finished. Tighten all of the truck's lug nuts to factory specifications. Re-install the battery cables and check your work to ensure that all fasteners are tightly secured.
