How to Replace Winch Straps

If you're hauling a boat home and the strap on your winch breaks, you must do something immediately. Stopping to buy another strap is your first step, but you still have to put it on the winch.

  • Buy a strap that is appropriate to your make and model of hand winch. Make certain that the strap matches the weight capacity of the winch.

  • Release all tension and remove the old strap. If it's difficult to remove, cut the end off.

  • Find the mandrel slot, which is the slot that the original webbing went through. It's in the middle of the center bar.

  • Slide the end of the new replacement winch straps through the mandrel and turn a few times.

  • Insert the winch bar into the end cap holes.

  • Turn a few times, holding the replacement winch strap to keep it tight. Guide it so that it goes on straight.

  • Make certain you don't overwrap. Don't put more than 4 to 6 layers of webbing on the wench. It can cause undo pressure and make turning difficult.
