How to Use a HKS Type 1 Turbo Timer

The HKS Type 1 turbo timer plugs into your turbo vehicle's ignition, allowing it to remain idling after the ignition key is removed. This ensures that the turbocharger properly cools down. Aside from this essential turbo timer function, the HKS Type 1 turbo timer has numerous other modes and features, as well as the ability to fully edit the turbo timer countdown behavior. Knowing how to use these additional features will let you take full advantage of the HKS Type 1.

Things You'll Need

  • HKS Type 1 turbo timer
  • Start your vehicle to power on the HKS turbo timer. There are nine modes on the turbo timer's main screen. To switch between selected modes, hit the "M" button on the top left of the turbo timer's face. To cycle between sub-modes of a selected mode, hit the "S" key, located beneath the "M." Press the "T1" and "T2" keys to cycle between sub-modes while in operation.

  • Select "Timer Mode" to edit the behavior of the turbo timer countdown. The first sub-mode is "Manual Mode." Select this option, and you can manually input the timer value, from 0 to 10 minutes. The following two sub-modes are "Memory 1 Mode" and "Memory 2 Mode." These are preset timers of 1 minute and 3 minutes, respectively. The final sub-mode is "Auto Mode." This mode will determine an appropriate cool-down time automatically, based off recorded vehicle RPM behavior.

  • Press the "M" button to switch to "Speed Display Mode." The two sub-modes ares "Speed Mode" and "Speed Peak Mode." These respectively display your current vehicle speed and peak vehicle speed over the recorded time period.

  • Press the "M" button to switch to "Speed Warning Mode," which will sound a warning beep when the vehicle reaches a preset speed limit. Press the "M" button again to view "Engine RPM Warning Mode," which will sound a warning beep when the engine reaches a preselected RPM limit.

  • Press the "M" button to bring up "Quarter Mile Time Mode." This mode has nine sub-modes, each containing a different time-based performance measurement, such as 0 to 100 meters, and 0 to 100 kilometers per hour. Cycle between selected performance measurements with the "S" button. When a sub-mode is selected, you can also cycle the timer's auto-start on and off with the "T2" button. Reset the recorded values with the "T1" button.

  • Press the "M" button to switch to "Stopwatch Mode." The first sub-mode is "Time measurement." This turns the turbo timer into a stopwatch, which can be started and stopped with the "T2" button. The second sub-mode is "Lap time measurement." This is equivalent to the previous sub-mode, except hitting the "T1" key while the stopwatch is activated will record the time and reset the clock, allowing for racetrack lap timing. Pressing the "M" button again cycles to "OFF Mode," which powers down the HKS Type 1 turbo timer.
