How to Wire VDO Gauges

VDO gauges are a brand of marine and automotive gauges that measure boost in a turbo-charged or super-charged engine, along with oil pressure, water pressure and fuel. These measurements are important to monitor to prevent engine failure and keep track of fuel economy. You can make adjustments to your engine, as needed, when these gauges note a problem, such as changing the oil level, tweaking the turbo or adding water coolant. You can install these gauges in your vehicle in an hour to an hour and a half depending on your familiarity with automotive work.

Things You'll Need

  • Color-coded tape
  • T-adapter
  • Oil pressure sender
  • Oil temperature sender
  • Mounting bracket (if not included with the gauge)
  • 18 AWG electrical wire
  • Butt connectors
  • Pliers
  • Spade connectors
  • Locate the oil pressure and temperature sending units. There should be two wires going to each sender. Label the wires to each sender with color-coded tape so you can distinguish between them. This makes it easier to hook them back up later. The bigger wire leading to the oil sending unit is the oil temperature sender wire; this wire can be thrown away as you will be replacing it.

  • Insert a T-adapter into the hole in the sender once you've removed the oil temperature sender wire. Screw the T-adapter into the hole tightly to prevent oil from leaking out of the sender.

  • Connect the oil temperature sender from the oil pressure VDO gauge to the T-adapter. Connect the oil pressure sender wire to the other side of the T-adapter. There should be one other temperature sending wire that needs to be connected to the last hole on the oil filter mount.

  • Route the wires from the oil sending unit into the compartment of the car. Connect a butt connector onto the end of the wire and insert another piece of 18 AWG wire into the butt connector. Crimp them together so that the wires are touching. Cut another piece of 18 AWG wire and strip it then insert the end of the wire into the butt connector and crimp it.

  • Connect the wire ends to the gauge by plugging the sender terminal into the back of the gauge.

  • Mount the gauge in its mounting bracket on the dashboard and attach the bracket with the supplied hardware.

  • Connect the negative wiring of the gauge into a negative ground on the vehicle. Locate a bolt that is on a non-painted surface. Connect the positive wiring of the gauge into a power supply that is on while the ignition is on. Test the gauge for operation; if it doesn't work, re-check the wiring connections.
