How to Keep Jeep Fenders Black

Keeping your Jeep's fenders the right color can be a challenge. The fenders and fender flares on Jeeps, especially the notoriously delicate black fender flares on some models of the Jeep Wrangler, are very prone to fading and chipping. You can take special measures to protect these flares from damage and to maintain their color.

Things You'll Need

  • Car cover
  • Garage
  • Water bucket
  • Gentle cleaning products
  • Sponge
  • Protect the fender from the elements. Storing your jeep in an enclosed garage or keeping it wrapped in a car cover when you are not driving it will help maintain the appearance of all of the Jeep's paint. Keeping the Jeep covered will help prevent wind, sun and other elemental damage from occurring.

  • Do not pressure wash your Jeep or put it through automatic car washes. The black paint on the fender flares is especially prone to flaking off during washing, so try to avoid washing the Jeep using any kind of high pressure hose or nozzle. Wash the fenders and fender flares with a sponge and bucket using gentle cleaning products.

  • Avoid going off-road. Driving your Jeep off-road is bad for the paint and plastic pieces. Vehicles that are driven off-road often get scratched by tree limbs and particles of sand or dirt that rub against the paint or scratch the plastic fender flares.

  • Wax your Jeep's fenders and apply a clear-coat wax protectant to the paint. There are a number of products on the market designed to help protect automotive paint from fading and chipping.
