How to Polish Faded Exterior Black Trim

Black bumpers and exterior trim accent the areas next to the body color. Sunlight and saltwater conditions near oceans along with road salt oxidize automotive exterior black trim. Oxidation makes the black color appear to have white mixed with it and can peel plastic trim off a car. Polishing faded trim with an automotive product specifically for black trim returns it to the original shiny black surface.

Things You'll Need

  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Bucket
  • Car wash sponge
  • Garden hose with nozzle
  • Chamois
  • Automotive body solvent
  • Microfiber towels
  • Blue painter's tape
  • Black trim conditioner
  • Mix dishwashing liquid and water in a bucket to make a soapy mixture. Wash all exterior trim with the mixture on a car wash sponge. Rinse the trim with water from a garden hose through a nozzle on medium force. Dry the trim with a chamois, wringing it out when it is wet.

  • Spray automotive body solvent on a microfiber towel. Wipe the solvent on all exterior trim to remove any buildup of oxidation and trim protectants.

  • Stick blue painter's tape on all sides of the trim to cover the paint.

  • Squeeze a small amount of automotive black trim conditioner onto a microfiber towel. Place the towel on the left end of the trim and wipe it on in a circular pattern. Work to the right end of the trim or bumper, adding a small amount of conditioner as needed to moisten the towel. Let the conditioner dry according to package directions.

  • Polish the black trim with an additional coat of black trim conditioner to obtain a deeper shine and maintain a wet look.

  • Pull the blue painter's tape off the vehicle.
