How to Restore Chrome Trim

Chrome trim adds flash to any vehicle. Unfortunately, many things can cause chrome detailing on a car to become dirty, fogged or smudged. There are a few simple steps that you can take to restore the luster and shine on your vehicle's chrome trim. All it takes is a bit of time and basic auto cleaning products that you may already have. And anything you don't have should be readily available at your local auto supply store.

Things You'll Need

  • Bucket
  • 6 cups all-purpose auto cleaner
  • 4 cups warm water
  • Sponge
  • Soft-bristled toothbrush
  • Rubber gloves (optional)
  • 2 lint-free cleaning cloths
  • Chrome polishing compound
  • Automotive spray wax
  • Combine 6 cups of all-purpose automotive cleaner with 4 cups of warm water in a bucket.

  • Put on the rubber gloves, as needed. Dip a sponge in the solution. Clean dirt and corrosion off the chrome trim by scrubbing the affected area.

  • Scrub the trim with a soft-bristled toothbrush, using firm, circular motions. Pay particular attention to stubborn dirt and hard-to-reach areas.

  • Rinse with clear water immediately after scrubbing to prevent any soap spots.

  • Dry the chrome trim with a lint-free cloth immediately after rinsing to prevent water spots.

  • Polish the chrome trim once it has dried completely. Apply a small amount of chrome polishing compound to a clean lint-free cloth. Rub the polish on the trim in gentle circles until you achieve the desired shine.

  • Spray a thin coat of automotive spray wax on the chrome trim after polishing. This will add more shine and help protect the area from further build-up.
