How to Clean Rubber Auto Trim

The rubber trim on a vehicle requires special care to continue looking new and fresh. Most of the dirt that accumulates on rubber trim can be cleaned while washing the car. If your rubber trim is excessively dirty, you may need to clean the trim directly. Once the trim is free of debris, you must protect it from the elements and the sun. The products necessary to clean your rubber trim can be found at any auto supply shop.

Things You'll Need

  • Soft cloth or sponge
  • Water
  • Car wash soap
  • Wax remover, if necessary
  • Rubber protectant
  • Wash the vehicle using water, car wash soap and a sponge or soft cloth. Wipe down the rubber trim with the soapy sponge or cloth until visible debris and dirt are removed.

  • Rinse the car thoroughly. Concentrate the spray of water along the trim to ensure that no soap remains.

  • Allow the trim to dry by air drying, or wipe it with a soft cloth or towel.

  • Apply a wax-removing solution if necessary. If wax is built up on the trim, there will be white spots on the surface. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to apply the solution and allow it to set. Remove the solution and rinse the trim.

  • Rub a rubber protectant into the trim. The protectant will create a layer on the trim to keep it shiny, soft and supple. UV rays and exposure to the elements and extreme temperatures can cause rubber to become dry and cracked. Rub the protectant into the trim using a soft cloth, following the manufacturer's directions.
