How Do I Remove Car Paint From a Headlight Cover?

Paint overspray can end up on headlight covers if they are not sufficiently protected when nearby parts of the vehicle are painted. Overspray can be quite unsightly if it is not removed. Removing overspray from paint can be done easily with the right supplies and approach. You should be able to get your headlights looking good in an hour or so with a clay bar, adhesive remover and some towels.

Things You'll Need

  • Clay bar
  • Adhesive/paint remover
  • Razor blade
  • Plastic polish
  • Shop rags
  • Soft, lint-free towel
  • Remove the headlight cover if possible. This will make it easier to work on. Most covers are held on with small, hidden screws. Consult a workshop manual for your car or examine the perimeter of the cover and the inside of the fender where it is installed.

  • Run a clay bar over the paint on the headlight cover to rub it off. Clay bars are available at any auto parts store in the auto detailing section or online at sites such as Autopia.

  • Use a mild paint and adhesive remover, such as Goof Off, to remove the paint. Apply the remover to a clean, lint-free rag then wipe it onto the paint. Rub the remover over the painted surface of the headlight cover.

  • Polish the headlight cover with a high-quality, abrasive-free, plastic polish and a soft, micro-fiber towel. Polish the cover in a circular pattern, flipping the cloth over frequently until the cover is completely polished.
