How to Remove Spots From Rubber Molding Around a Truck Window

Spots occur on the rubber or flexible plastic molding around car and truck windows because of the porous nature of the material. Vehicle owners sometimes use no protectant on this molding, leading to spots and blotches from weathering. Another case may be that they use a protectant dressing on the molding but the coverage is uneven. Therefore, water and contaminants are absorbed irregularly, resulting in spotting. To remove the spots you must first strip away any protectant dressing that may be present, wash thoroughly, and reapply a protectant to keep the molding looking new.

Things You'll Need

  • All-purpose cleaner
  • Micro-fiber towels
  • Auto wash detergent
  • Sponge
  • Protectant dressing
  • Clean the molding with an all-purpose cleaner. This will remove any whitish spots caused by previous applications of protectant and wax.

Roll the windows down. Some of the molding is inside, and you do not want to miss these areas as you clean.

Spray or pour the cleaner on a micro-fiber towel made for auto detailing. Do not spray or pour the all-purpose cleaner on the truck itself. You do not want to get it on the painted surfaces of the truck body.

Clean the molding inch by inch, making sure to get into every crack and crevice. Move around the towel frequently to make sure you use clean micro-fiber for each new area of molding.

  • Wash the truck, including the freshly-cleaned molding, with a natural sponge or one made specifically for automobiles. Use only autowash, not dish-washing detergent or any household soap. Wipe the truck dry, making sure to dry all the inner and outer areas of the molding. Let the areas air dry after wiping.

  • Apply a fresh coat of protectant dressing to the molding. Again, use a micro-fiber towel to cover all areas. Apply this as evenly as possible so that all areas of the molding absorb an equal amount of dressing. Wipe away any excess.
