How to Install the AC Filter of a 2000 Honda Accord EX

Replacing the cabin air filters for your 2000 Honda Accord EX isn't exactly straightforward, but the task isn't difficult enough to discourage the average do-it-yourself person from taking it on. Just like your vehicle's fuel and engine air filter, the cabin air filter should be replaced at regular intervals. As a general rule, it's recommended that you change the cabin air filter every 24 months, or 30,000 miles. If you drive through particularly dusty areas – or where air pollution is a large concern – you may find it necessary to change the filter more often.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Honda No. 80291-S84-A01 cabin air filters or equivalent
  • Open the front passenger door, then remove the fuse panel cover from the side of the dashboard. Remove the two screws that secure the right side of the lower dash panel, using a Phillips screwdriver. Unsnap the lower dash panel from the vehicle. Remove the three Phillips screws that secure the metal glove compartment hinge frame to the dash.

  • Open the glove compartment and remove the contents. Pry off the two rectangular screw covers on the upper-left and right-side lips of the glove compartment opening, using a flat-head screwdriver, then remove the exposed screws. Remove the two upper screws that secure the top of the glove compartment.

  • Release the side hooks on the left and right side of the glove compartment's opening, near the door stops. Pull down on latch striker, then pull the compartment assembly from the dashboard. Disconnect the wiring connector for the compartment's light. Disengage the lower locking tab for the cabin air filter door, then remove the door from the HVAC housing.

  • Pull the lower filter from the housing, followed by the top filter. Remove the filters from the frames. Insert the replacement filters into the frames, with the arrows pointing toward the driver's side of the vehicle. Ensure that the plastic partition on the frame slides in between the first and second folds of the paper element.

  • Slide the upper filter into the housing. Push up on the upper filter, then slide the lower filter into the housing. Replace the cabin air filter door. Connect the wiring connector to the glove compartment lighting, then fit the compartment to the dash opening. Replace the four glove compartment screws and two screw covers. Replace the three hinge frame screws.

  • Press-fit the lower dash panel, then replace the two screws. Press-fit the fuse panel cover to the side of the dash to finish the installation process.
