In 1986, Mazda launched its B-series lineup of pickup trucks with the release of the B2000 pickup. The 1991 B-series pickup came in two models: B2200 and B2600. The B2200 came fitted with an 85-horsepower, 2.2-liter, four-cylinder engine. Linked to this engine was a five-speed manual transmission, or an optional four-speed automatic. Mazda recommended changing the gear oil in the five-speed transmission every 60,000 miles in regular driving conditions and every 30,000 in severe conditions. The transmission has two easily accessed plugs to make draining and refilling the transmission fluid a quick process.
Raise the front of the B2200 with a floor jack and position jack stands beneath the truck's frame rails. Lower the Mazda onto the jack stands.
Crawl beneath the pickup until you are just behind the transmission bell-housing. Find the transmission drain and check-and-fill plugs -- the drain plug is on the bottom of the transmission and the check-and-fill plug is about halfway up the driver's side of the transmission.
Position a drain pan under the drain plug, and remove the check-and-fill plug, using a 3/8-inch-drive ratchet. Remove the drain plug with a 3/8-inch-drive ratchet, and allow the fluid to drain from the transmission.
Once the fluid slows to only a few drips, wipe the drain plug off with a clean, lint-free cloth, and hand-tighten it into the transmission. Torque the drain plug to 15 to 20 foot-pounds, using a 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench.
Cut the nozzle on a bottle of 80W-90 or 75W-90 gear oil open, using a utility knife. Insert the nozzle into the check-and-fill hole and squeeze the entire bottle of gear oil into the transmission. Repeat this step until gear oil drips from the check-and-fill hole -- the transmission has a capacity of 4.2 pints of gear oil.
Wipe the check-and-fill plug off with a clean, lint-free cloth and hand-tighten it into its hole. Tighten the check-and-fill plug to 15 to 20 foot-pounds, using a torque wrench and socket.
Raise the B2200 of the jack stands, using a floor jack, and remove the jack stands. Lower the truck to the ground.
Take the old gear oil in the drain pan to a used automotive fluid-recycling center for disposal. Many auto parts stores take old gear oil free of charge.
