How to Change the Tranny Fluid on an Evo 9 MR

The Mitsubishi EVO 9 is a high-performance, turbocharged, all-wheel-drive sports sedan. Mitsubishi recommends that the transmission fluid be changed every 30,000 miles for regular use, or every 15,000 miles for severe use. Fresh fluid is an important part of assuring the transmission remains in good operating condition. This process is easily accomplished because the EVO transmission is equipped with both drain and fill plugs.

Things You'll Need

  • Comprehensive set of hand tools including socket set, ratchet and extensions
  • Torque wrench
  • catch pan
  • replacement transmission fluid
  • hydraulic jack
  • Funnel with extra long narrow feed tube
  • Use a hydraulic jack and jack stands to elevate your EVO if you need to gain more access space underneath the car. Locate the transmission, which will be a large silver housing bolted to the back of the engine. Closely examine the transmission, and you will see a 17mm fill plug, and a 24mm drain plug. The fill plug will be higher on the housing.

  • Use a 17mm socket to remove the fill plug. You want to always remove the fill plug first to make sure you have the ability to fill the transmission; otherwise you can end up with an inoperable car. Once the fill plug is off, use a 24mm socket to remove the drain plug, placing a catch pan underneath to catch the fluid. It will take some time to fully drain.

  • Re-install the drain plug after cleaning it off (some metal shavings are common as it is magnetic), making sure to reuse the aluminum washer that sits between the plug and the transmission housing, torquing down the bolt to 24 foot-pounds.

  • Fill the transmission through the fill plug hole with 2.9 quarts of fluid. You have two options for filling; snake an extremely long funnel tube down from the engine bay, or directly fill the transmission with a bottle if you have adequate access. The vehicle needs to be level for proper filling, so if your EVO is on a lift or sitting on jack stands, you may wish to simply squeeze the fluid from the bottle into the fill hole. Once full, tighten down the fill plug to 23 foot-pounds.
