35,000-Mile Service Recommendations on a Honda

Honda's 35,000-mile service interval is not particularly dissimilar to other cars and trucks. Regardless of the reputation of Honda engines, they must be cared for to an equal standard as other vehicles. The 35,000-mile service, however, does not include such things as draining and changing transmission fluid and filter or the engine coolant.

Oil Change

  • The basic service required at the 35,000-mile service interval is the vehicle's oil change. It is necessary to change the oil and oil filter at this stage to help prevent deposits from building up in the engine. Exchange the used engine oil with new, SAE 5W-30 weight oil, as well as a high-quality oil filter.

Chassis Lubrication

  • Lubricating the chassis components is critical to ensure that parts such as the upper and lower ball joints, tie rod ends and suspension components do not prematurely wear. Due to the nature of the construction of these parts, the grease originally added to these components at the factory will seep through rubber components and around seals, making it necessary to replace them now and then. Use a grease gun if you are performing the service yourself, and install the tip of the gun over the grease fittings located around the car near the wheels. Pump grease into the fittings until their corresponding rubber bushings are firm to the touch, but do not overfill them, as this can lead to the bushing rupturing.

Tire Rotation

  • The tires of the car should be rotated whenever the vehicle's oil is being changed. This is done by jacking up the car and removing the wheels and tires. The rear tires are moved to the front of the car, and are mounted on the same side of the car from which they came, while the front tires should be moved to the opposite side of the car onto the rear axle.

Air Filter Replacement

  • Finally, to complete the 35,000-mile service interval, replace the Honda's air filter. The filter is located inside of the air box. Open the hood, then locate the large black tube that routes from the engine to a black box near the core support at the front of the car. The core support is what the radiator is mounted on. Remove the bolts or screws securing the top of the air box into place, then pull off the top. Inside, you will find the air filter. Lift the filter out of the air box and replace it with the same size new filter. Reinstall the top of the air box and close the hood of the car to complete the 35,000-mile service interval.
