How to Clean an Intake System

A vehicle's air intake system sucks air into the vehicle's engine, where it mixes with the fuel. This mixture creates combustion, which propels the car's wheels. Cleaning the air intake is important and will prevent blockages that will keep air from going into the engine. This will keep your car running at full capacity, giving you optimal horsepower.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Brake cleaner
  • Turn off the vehicle and open its hood. Disconnect the black battery cable.

  • Remove the two hose clamps around the top and bottom of the intake hose using the Phillips screwdriver.

  • Pull the intake hose out of the vehicle's engine bay.

  • Use brake cleaner to spray the entire intake system down. This will remove debris as well as any oil that may be on the intake.

  • Place the intake hose back onto the mounts and tighten its hose clamps with the screwdriver. Reconnect the black battery cable and close the hood.
