How to Remove an AC Clutch Pulley on a Pontiac Montana

Removing the air conditioner pulley off the clutch in a Pontiac Montana is not very complicated as the pulley is easily accessible from the top of the engine. The purpose of the pulley is to give the belt a path to provide power to the air conditioner. A faulty pulley will cause the air conditioner to not run properly, requiring replacement. Removal of the pulley will take a few minutes with the proper tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set
  • Ensure the car is turned off. Open the hood for access to the engine compartment.

  • Locate the tensioner pulley toward the middle of the engine on the passenger side. Place a socket wrench over the bolt and turn it clockwise. Take the belt off the air conditioner pulley. The air conditioner pulley is located below the alternator pulley.

  • Unscrew the bolt in the middle of the pulley with a socket wrench. Pull the bolt away from the pulley.

  • Pull the pulley away from the air conditioner clutch. The pulley will come off the clutch with little effort.

  • Place the pulley to the side.
