How to Fix the Air Conditioner in a Dodge Pickup

Recharging the air conditioning in your Dodge pickup truck is just one of many ways to resolve issues with the vehicle's air conditioning unit. Recharging it is also one of the easier and cheaper ways to troubleshoot your air conditioning system. You can obtain refrigerant at most auto parts retailers.

  • Open your pickup's hood and locate the high and low refrigerant lines at the rear of the engine bay. These are threaded air-fill nipples that are about 1/8 inch wide.

  • Connect the recharge hose on the can of refrigerant to the fill nipple in your engine bay.

  • Turn the valve on the refrigerant hose carefully and slowly so it opens to introduce a little refrigerant, then quickly close the valve.

  • Start your pickup's engine and turn on the air conditioning to its lowest temperature setting and highest fan speed.

  • Open the valve on the can of refrigerant while the engine is running so the system can draw in the refrigerant.

  • Allow the can of refrigerant to fully exhaust itself, then shut off your engine and turn off the valve on the can. Turn your engine back on to see if the refrigerant recharge fixed your air conditioning. If you feel cold air blowing again, it's likely you succeeded.
