How to Troubleshoot a Hummer

The Hummer was originally developed as a military vehicle. It was then adapted into consumer models by General Motors. It is known for its large box-like shape. The H1, H2 and H3 are the three main models of Hummers. The Hummer is a fairly reliable vehicle and many problems are the result of improper care and poor maintenance. However, even the best cared for cars can still have problems, including the Hummer.

  • Check the Hummer's battery. If the vehicle is failing to start, this is the first place to look. Make sure that the terminals are clean and free from corrosion. Use a wrench to tighten the battery connector cables. Loose cables can cause the vehicle not to start. Check the oil levels and fill the tank with fresh clean fuel as well.

  • Check the fuses. The fuse box panel should be located below the steering column and trim panel in the Hummer. Check to make sure the fuses for the malfunctioning components are working, and replace them if necessary. Fuses are inexpensive. Check the spark plugs. A failing spark plug can cause the Hummer not to start or take a few attempts to start.

  • Check the fuel pump and alternator. If the fuel pump is clogged or not working, then the Hummer will experience problems accelerating and may not accelerate smoothly at all. If the alternator is not working, the battery will likely be unable to hold a charge, and the Hummer will be prone to power loss.

  • Check the air filter. A clogged air filter can happen during off-roading as dirt and debris may be clogged in the air filter. This can rob the engine of air and subsequently power. Clean the air filter and replace it if necessary.
