How to Remove the AC Clutch in a Jeep

Like most vehicles, Jeeps use an A/C compressor clutch to keep the coolant system in working order. Sometimes this clutch creates problems, such as vehicle rattling and must be replaced or examined. By removing the clutch, you can safely examine it to determine the source of the problem. If your clutch is worn, simply replace the AC clutch with a newer model. Removing the clutch can be complex. Those without experience should take their car to a mechanic.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Clutch plate puller
  • Snap ring pliers
  • Screwdriver
  • Pop the hood of your Jeep. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery's negative terminal.

  • Loosen the outer bolt of the clutch plate using the clutch plate puller tool designed specifically for Jeeps.

  • Tap the edge of the clutch plate using a plastic mallet until the clutch plate detaches from the compressor shaft's splines.

  • Grasp the clutch plate and pull it upwards. Set the plate aside.

  • Remove the snap ring connected to the clutch pulley using snap ring pliers. Slide the pulley off the clutch and set it aside. Remove the wire harness's screw using a screwdriver and pull the external snap ring away from the coil.

  • Slide the coil assembly away from the compressor. Grasp the clutch and pull it out of the Jeep.
