Fuel Injection System Cleaning

Cleaning the fuel injector for any type of vehicle is important. Using a dirty fuel injector has some consequences to it such as getting less energy from the gasoline, emitting even more pollution than usual, and in turn this can affect the performance of the vehicle. You can take your vehicle to have a professional do the job, but to save money, you can take a little bit of time and do it yourself instead.

Safety First

  • The cleaning solvents that are used in fuel injectors are very acidic so use these with extreme care. Wear goggles, gloves and any other sort of skin protection that you can feel comfortable with.

Never use these solvent where there is an open flame or any chance of a spark. Avoid extreme heat also as these chemicals are very flammable and may explode or cause a fire. Because the machinery that you are using is pressurized always use caution when connecting and disconnecting. Neglect to do this may cause personal injury.

Starting Out

  • Shut the engine off and lift the hood to access the engine compartment. Locate the fuel injection system, which is usually found right on top of the engine. If you cannot find them, look in the manual of your car for instructions on how to find them. Install tubing connected to the fuel inlet and outlet, or disconnect the fuel pump to stop the flow of the gasoline. This will ensure there is no gas going to the engine.

Hook the pressurized solvent up to the engine and turn the engine on now that the fuel has been stopped. Let the solvent run right through the working engine. Turn the engine off and take away the cleaning solution.

Reconnect

  • Reconnect the fuel lines and the fuel pump so that the gasoline will run normally through the engine. Turn the engine on to check the performance level. It should be running better than it was before the cleaning. If you cannot notice the difference the first time, shut the engine off and restart it, trying it again. To fully be aware if there has been an improvement, take the vehicle for a test drive. There are cases in which it takes several minutes for the cleaning to take effect.

In the case that there is still no improvement, then you will have to remove the injectors from the car. You need special equipment to clean fuel injectors when they are taken out of the car and it is much cheaper to go to a professional mechanic who already has this machinery. After the cleaning job has been completed, to prevent this from being a more common occurrence, check the gasoline that you put into your car. Many times, it is the result of poor quality gas that clogs of fuel injectors faster than usual.
