Installation Instructions for the PerTronix Ignitor

The Pertronix Ignitor is designed to replace breaker points and factory electronic ignitions with a self-contained and maintenance free electronic ignition system. It also delivers twice the voltage to spark plugs, which increases fuel economy, horsepower and the life of your spark plugs. The installation process is designed to be done without the help of a professional. Knowing the terminology of some parts of the engine is essential, but following a few steps will get your Ignitor up and running in no time.

  • Disconnect the battery or turn off the ignition switch. Take out the rotor and distributor cap. Check the rotor and distributor cap for damage and replace them as needed.

  • Take out the grommet, points and condenser. Clean any oil or dirt from the point cam and breaker plate. Install the Ignitor plate onto the breaker plate. Fasten the Ignitor plate into place.

  • Reattach the distributor ground wire securely if you had removed it during the installation process. Install the magnet sleeve over the distributor shaft and place it on the point cam.

  • Rotate the magnet sleeve until the slight locating position is felt, then apply pressure. Press down firmly to ensure that the sleeve is fully seated after the sleeve has been lined up on the point cam. Put the two wires through the hole in the distributor housing.

  • Put the grommet in place. Keep the wires from interfering with any moving engine parts. Replace the distributor cap and rotor. Check the spark plug wires to make sure they're securely fastened.

  • Connect the black wire to the negative side of the ignition coil. Connect the red wire to the positive side of the ignition coil. Reconnect the battery and check to make sure that all wires are connected correctly. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes, then set the timing in the normal manner.
