How to Grease a Window Regulator

The window regulators in your vehicle's doors move the window up and down when you command it to do so via the power window switch. The moving components in the window regulator assembly rely on white lithium grease to keep them from damaging one another when in motion. While many people never grease a window regulator, doing so isn't a bad idea if you already have the door panel removed for another reason. Anyone with a god mechanical mind can perform this task.

Things You'll Need

  • Trim tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Brake cleaner
  • Rags
  • White lithium grease
  • ¼-inch paint brush
  • Close the window for the door in question. Remove the door panel with the trim tool and Phillips screwdriver. This process will vary depending on the year, make and model of your vehicle so if you're unsure of how to do this, refer to the repair manual for your specific vehicle.

  • Clean the old grease and any other dirt or foreign debris from the window regulator using brake cleaner and rags.

  • Apply a generous layer of white lithium grease to the moving portions of the window regulator using a ¼-inch paint brush.

  • Reinstall the vehicle's door panel by reversing the removal process.
