Troubleshooting issues with your Toyota Prius can become a guessing game and frustrating process if you do not perform a proper diagnosis. Modern cars today are equipped with a universal onboard diagnostic port known as OBD II. These ports allow you to plug in code scanners, which will scan the Prius' onboard computer for error codes and point you to the specific failing components of your Prius. By performing a code scan to troubleshoot issues with your car, you can save both time and money by finding out what is directly causing the symptoms.
Locate the OBD II port in your Prius underneath the steering wheel on the right-hand side.
Insert the OBD II code scanning tool into the port and turn on your Prius. If you do not have a code scanning tool, you can obtain one at most auto parts stores, some of which can perform the code scan for you for free using their in-house code scanner.
Note any error codes that come up on the display of the code scanning tool. Bring these codes to your local auto parts store or Toyota dealership to have them decoded.
