How to Mix Nitrogen & Air in Car Tires

Nitrogen is being used in tires more often than ever before, due primarily to the fact that has a much tougher time escaping the tire as compared to standard compressed air. It is also much better for the wheel and stem since it helps protect them from oxidation. If the tire shop used nitrogen in your tires and you need to add air, then you might be a little worried about the effect. Rest assured that there is no reason to be concerned. You can mix nitrogen and oxygen without any adverse effects.

Things You'll Need

  • Air compressor with inflation fitting
  • Air gauge
  • Find a comfortable place to work on your car and set the parking brake.

  • Start up your air compressor and let the tank fill up.

  • Open the driver’s side door of your car and look for the PSI specifications for the front and rear tires on the side of the door. Sometimes it is located on the lid of the gas cap.

  • Check the inflation of each tire one by one using the air gauge. Fill each tire with the air compressor inflation hose, if needed.
