Bad or non-functioning wiper blades can cause your Subaru to fail a state inspection. Mostly, however, it's a safety issue. If your wipers are not working to spec, your visibility during inclement weather will suffer. Change the wipers once they begin to make harsh scraping noises. While looking at the rubber insert, you may also notice cracking and fraying -- further indicators that it's time for replacements. You can change your Subaru's wiper blades in only a few minutes, and you need no tools to do so.
Begin with the Subaru's driver's side wiper blade. Grasp the wiper arm and move it away from the windshield. Stand the arm straight up, until it locks into position.
Locate and unfasten the security clasp at the wiper frame's central connector. Depending on the brand of wiper frame currently on the Subaru, this could be a tab or lever that needs to be pressed or moved with your finger. Undoing this clasp will "unlock" the wiper blade's frame and allow it to be easily removed.
Remove the wiper blade's frame. Hold the wiper arm with one hand, and grasp the wiper's frame with the other. Pull the frame out of the J-hook at the end of the Subaru's wiper arm.
Align the replacement wiper blade frame with the "J" at the end of the Subaru's wiper arm. Slide the replacement frame into the hook. You will hear a slight "Snap" or "Click" sound, as the securing clasp locks into place.
Lower the arm and the newly installed wiper blade to Subaru's windshield. Repeat this process on the passenger's side of the vehicle.
