How to Remove Spark Plugs on a 1997 Dodge Caravan

The 1997 Dodge Caravan was part of the third generation of the van produced by Dodge. These vans feature a six-cylinder engine for powering the vehicle. You can remove spark plugs on a 1997 Dodge Caravan yourself and save some money on an auto mechanic. The tricky part in this procedure involves the three spark plugs mounted at the rear of the engine. They are hard to reach.

Things You'll Need

  • Car ramps
  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set
  • Socket extension (less than 2 inches in length)
  • Spark plug socket
  • Spark plug wire puller
  • Drive the 1997 Dodge Caravan onto a sturdy pair of car ramps. Shift the car into park and set the parking brake. Remove the keys from the ignition. Allow the engine approximately 45 minutes to cool. Pop the hood.

  • Disconnect the negative, black, cable from the battery. You may need to lift up the protective cover on the terminal in order to access the nut on the side of the terminal end. Loosen the nut and then pull the terminal off the battery.

  • Use a pair of spark plug wire pullers to pull the rubber boot off the spark plug on the right-front of the engine. Attach a spark plug socket to your socket wrench and slip it over the spark plug. Turn counterclockwise to remove the spark plug. Repeat this process for the other two plugs on the front of the engine.

  • Position yourself underneath the 1997 Dodge Caravan. You will be able to see two of the three remaining plugs. The third is hidden behind the manifold. Remove the spark plug wires from the first visible plug by pulling it straight out with your hands. There will not be enough room to use the spark plug puller.

  • Attach a short extension, less than 2 inches, to the socket. Use this to remove the spark plugs.

  • Feel with your hand around the exhaust manifold until you locate the remaining spark plug. Pull off the wire. Remove the spark plug and replace with a new one. This process is difficult, as you will have to do it by touch, but it is possible. Because of the cramped space, you will not be able to turn the ratchet more than 1/2-inch or so before resetting it.
