How to Install a MAP Sensor in a Subaru Outback

The MAP or Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor on the Subaru Outback is easily replaceable with basic hand tools. You will find it near the top of the engine, attached to the throttle body with two screws. If you have checked the voltage across the connector and it is out of the normal range (0.5v to 4.5v, depending on throttle position), you should replace the sensor.

Things You'll Need

  • New MAP sensor
  • #2 Phillips head screwdriver
  • Small flat blade screwdriver
  • General automotive repair tools
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable. If your vehicle is prior to 2002 and has the radio theft lock system, follow the instructions in your owner's manual to disable the system before you disconnect the battery.

  • Use the flat blade screwdriver to release the clip on the cable connected to the MAP sensor. Set the cable out of the way while ensuring the connector is safe from damage.

  • Use the #2 Philips screwdriver to remove the old sensor and install the new sensor. Reconnect the sensor cable. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
