How to Switch From 13 Inch to 14 Inch Trailer Tires

Trailers are constructed with different tire sizes to handle the workload that they are created to haul. Sometimes a trailer height might be too low for the hitch on your truck. You can change the wheel and tire size on most trailers to fix and level the height to work the best with your vehicle. If you have a trailer that has 13-inch tires, you can change to 14 inches without much difficulty.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stand
  • Lug wrench
  • Ruler
  • Jack up one of the tires on your trailer and place a jack stand under the axle for safety.

  • Remove the wheel and tire from the trailer using a lug wrench to remove the lug nuts.

  • Measure the distance between the wheel center and the lug nuts using a ruler. Write down the measurements.

  • Go to an automotive wrecking yard. The wrecking yard often will not find wheels for you; instead they will have you go and look for yourself. Use a ruler to check for 14-inch wheels. Also check for correct bolt and center sizes.

  • Inspect the tires on the new wheels you find to make sure that they are correct and that they still have decent tread.

  • Return to your trailer with your new tires. Fit the new tire and wheel on the trailer and tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench.

  • Remove the jack stand and lower the jack. Install the other tire on the other side in the same fashion as above.

  • Check to make sure you have accomplished your goal and that the trailer and hitch height are level. It is possible that you might have to make a few trips to the wrecking yard until you get it correct.
